My habit, which I am now doubting after reading a few threads here.

If I send someone a message and there is no reply in about two days, I unmatch. Clean it out, gone. Same if we exchange a couple of messages and it stalls. I like an inbox with three live conversations in it, not twenty dead ones with one grey tick sitting there.

The argument for it is obvious enough. Dead matches are just a wall of small reminders that people did not want to talk to me, and looking at that every evening is not good for anyone.

But I have now twice unmatched somebody and then seen the profile again in the feed weeks later and thought, oh, actually. And once someone messaged me right as I did it, which was an odd feeling.

So: what is your cutoff, and does anyone deliberately leave them all sitting there? I cannot work out whether two days is efficient or just impatient with extra steps.

two days is fast. plenty of people open the app twice a week, and one of those people is the person you were going to like most

What the playbook says about this

Matching threads split into two questions: what to say, and what a silence means. The answer to both is usually further up the profile than the message box, which is why the bio and the tag stack are here alongside the etiquette.
