Complete own goal on Saturday and I am posting it as a public service.

I picked the bar. I picked it because it is good and because I have had nice nights there. What I had never done is try to have a first conversation with a stranger in it at half past eight on a Saturday.

We shouted at each other for two hours. I understood maybe half of what she said. She asked me something reasonably serious about halfway through and I answered a completely different question because I had misheard it, and I watched her decide not to correct me.

She was lovely. I have no idea if we get on, because I never actually heard her speak at a normal volume.

I have asked if she fancies a coffee somewhere quiet next week and she said yes, so it is not a disaster. But I have clearly been thinking about venue as where would be nice rather than where can two strangers actually talk.

What do you look for? Is there a rule beyond quiet and public that I should know about?

What the playbook says about this

The threads here agree on more than they let on: a short call first, a public place second, and your own way home. The one nobody argues about is the third, which is what you hand over and when.

  • Fifteen minutes that settle everything
  • A meeting point that gives nothing away
  • The staged way to trade contact details
