The badge said a hundred and nine and I could not open it for a week

Posted as hundred_nine_unread, 22 August 2026

Looking for
somebody who understands why I keep the whole thing switched off
Experience
Seven years, two arrangements, both slow to start.
Around
the inner west, Sydney

At its worst the red number on the icon was a hundred and nine, and I could not open the app for a week because of it. Not because I was popular. Because every one of those was a small obligation, and a hundred and nine small obligations sitting on a home screen is a physical weight, and the app is designed to make it feel like one.

I fixed it in the least sophisticated way available. Badge off, notifications off, the icon buried, and a decision to open the thing on Sunday afternoons only. I am a considerably better correspondent than I was.

Thirty five, the inner west, switch, seven years in, two arrangements that each took months to start and then lasted years, which is not a coincidence.

What I want is somebody similarly unbothered about response times. If you need an answer within the hour we will both be unhappy. If you can write something considered on a Wednesday and read my reply on a Sunday, we will do very well. Both directions, agreed in advance, never improvised.

Not looking for anybody who reads slowness as disinterest. Not looking to explain again why the notifications are off. And not looking for a person whose main use of this app is the feeling of being contacted.

What to have sorted before you reply

Which direction is on the table this month is not in the post, and asking flat out reads badly. That takes a conversation, and a conversation needs a room you can walk out of.
