I came back after two years away and the whole thing works differently

Posted as two_years_off, 18 July 2026

Looking for
somebody willing to explain the mechanics without making it a favour
Experience
Twelve years, then two years of nothing, now starting again.
Around
the inner west, Sydney

I was off all of this for two years while I looked after somebody and then while I recovered from looking after somebody. When I came back in March, the app I had used for years had changed shape entirely. Different layout, different rules about who sees you, a paid tier that did not exist before, and a whole grammar of behaviour that everybody else had apparently agreed on while I was gone.

The dynamics part I still know. I have twelve years of that and it does not expire. It is the mechanics that defeated me. It took a fortnight to work out that my old account had effectively been buried for inactivity and that starting fresh would have been faster.

Forty eight, the inner west, switch, twelve years in with a two year gap in the middle.

What I want is an arrangement with somebody who has also been doing this a while and is not looking for novelty. I can lead and I can follow, I know which I want when, and I am past the stage of proving anything to anybody, and I am in no rush at all. Two years of caring for somebody removes most of your urgency about everything.

Not looking for anybody who wants to be my rebound into a social life. Not looking to be told the gap makes me rusty, since the gap mostly made me patient. And not looking for a person who cannot tolerate being asked a straightforward question about how something works.

What to have sorted before you reply

Which direction is on the table this month is not in the post, and asking flat out reads badly. That takes a conversation, and a conversation needs a room you can walk out of.
