Four hundred matches, eleven conversations, one coffee
- Looking for
- one conversation at a time with somebody who wants the same
- Experience
- Three years, two short dynamics, both of them started off the app.
- Around
- Brooklyn, New York
Four hundred and six matches in fourteen months. Eleven of them turned into a conversation that got past three messages. One turned into a coffee, which was pleasant, and then nothing. Those are my real numbers and I have finally stopped reading them as a verdict on me.
Twenty eight, Brooklyn, submissive, three years in. What I have worked out is that a match here is not interest. It is a shrug that costs nothing, and in a queue this deep everybody is shrugging at forty people a night. I did it too, for about a year, and I was not being cruel. I was being efficient in a way that produced absolutely nothing.
So I am running it differently now. One conversation at a time. When something is going somewhere I stop opening the stack, and if it ends I say so before I start another. It sounds precious written down. It has already given me two better conversations than the previous year managed in total.
What I want underneath the logistics is structure that holds up on ordinary days. Rules I check in with, someone who notices when I go quiet, an arrangement that has a shape rather than a mood.
I am not looking to be one of the six people you are keeping warm. I am not asking for exclusivity in week one, only for honesty about the number. And I am not going to be talked into meeting the same night we match, because the one time I did I spent the whole evening being somebody's errand.
