I turned every alert off in January and I am not going back
- Looking for
- somebody who does not need an answer within the hour
- Experience
- Twelve years, three dynamics, all of them steady.
- Around
- the south side, Glasgow
Every notification off since January. No badge, no sound, no preview. I open it in the evening for twenty minutes and that is the whole of my relationship with this app now.
The reason was not discretion, it was that I had become somebody who checked a phone in the middle of a conversation with a friend. That is a small thing and it was making me worse at the actual skill this requires, which is attention. You cannot be attentive to one person while a device is arranging little interruptions all day.
Forty five, the south side, dominant, twelve years in, three dynamics and all of them long.
What it means in practice is that I am slow and reliable rather than fast and scattered. If you write to me at eleven in the morning you will hear back after seven at night, and what you get will be a proper answer rather than three words sent between meetings.
What I want is an ongoing arrangement with written expectations and a real rhythm, with somebody who finds that pace a relief rather than a problem. Not looking for anybody who reads a delay as disinterest. Not looking for a person whose main use of this app is the feeling of being contacted.
