the profile and the person were not describing the same thing

Something happened this week that I am still turning over.

Matched with someone whose profile was thorough. Tags, a proper bio, a clear line about what she wanted and how she wanted it. It was the sort of profile you read and think, right, at least we both know what this is.

Three days of conversation later, the picture is completely different. Not contradictory exactly. It is more that everything on the profile was aspirational, things she has been reading about and would like to try one day, and the conversation was about a life that has none of it in it yet.

Which is completely fine, to be clear. New is fine. I was new once and somebody was patient with me.

The problem is that I had made a whole set of assumptions off a page that turned out to describe an intention rather than a life, and I had done that quite carefully and been quite wrong.

Is there a way to spot this earlier? Some question that gets at the difference between what someone has done and what someone has been meaning to do, without turning the chat into an audit?

What the playbook says about this

Matching threads split into two questions: what to say, and what a silence means. The answer to both is usually further up the profile than the message box, which is why the bio and the tag stack are here alongside the etiquette.
