Complete beginner here, and I mean complete. Reading a lot, lurking this forum for a month, zero actual experience. My profile says curious, which felt accurate without being a confession.
Now I’ve matched with someone whose profile clearly knows what she’s doing, years of it by the sound of things. I’ve drafted five first messages and deleted all of them. The honest one says something like, I’ll be upfront, I’m brand new to this and mostly want to learn slowly. The cool one asks about something in her bio as if I ask such questions all the time.
The honest draft feels like leading with my resume’s worst line. The cool draft feels like the start of a lie I’ll have to maintain, and from lurking here I gather that goes badly somewhere around message forty.
So where’s the line? Is new-and-honest-about-it actually attractive to experienced people, or is that something beginners tell each other for comfort? Real answers appreciated, my finger is hovering.
