Every offer of mentoring so far has come with an obvious price
- Looking for
- somebody with no agenda about how quickly I learn
- Experience
- None. Four months on the app and four unhelpful offers.
- Around
- South Beach, Miami
Four different people have offered to teach me. All four presented it as a favour, all four had a proposed timetable, and in three cases the timetable involved meeting within the week. I have been on this app for four months and the pattern is consistent enough that I now assume the word mentor means something other than what it says. This is not a complaint about anybody in particular. It is what an inexperienced profile attracts.
Thirty, no experience, I do freight documentation, South Beach, and I put the profile up in April after a long time thinking about it.
What I actually want is much less exciting. Somebody to talk to over months rather than weeks. The chance to change my mind about things without it being treated as a problem. A sense of what this is like on a Tuesday rather than at its most dramatic.
I am not looking for a fast track and I have no timetable at all. I am not looking to be told that I will know when I am ready by somebody who has already decided when that is. And I would rather talk to somebody who does not want anything from me for a good while, which I suspect is a rarer thing to find on here than it should be.
