I picked a word at signup and it has shaped everything since
- Looking for
- a conversation that does not start from that word
- Experience
- None in person. Two months on an app under a label I invented.
- Around
- up towards Fort Lauderdale, Miami
When the app made me choose I picked the word that sounded least alarming, and I have since discovered that the choice governs everything: who sees me, who writes, what they assume, what they open with. I have changed it twice in two months and each time the queue has completely reorganised itself around me. It is a very strange feeling to be sorted so decisively on the basis of a guess I made in four seconds at a kitchen table.
Twenty nine, no experience at all, I do warehouse scheduling, north of the city, two months into an app and honestly none the wiser.
What I have worked out is small and probably obvious to everybody else. I know I am drawn to structure. I do not know which end of it I belong at. I suspect I will only find out by talking to people rather than by thinking harder.
So: conversation, no expectations, and please do not tell me which one I obviously am within ten minutes of meeting me. Three people have now done that with tremendous confidence and no two of them agreed. I am not asking to be figured out. I am asking for company while I do it.
