I worked out what I want from how I behave at my job

Posted as noticed_at_work, 8 September 2026

Looking for
somebody who can tell me whether that is a real reason or a story I am telling
Experience
None, unless twenty years of a certain sort of job counts.
Around
the east side, Los Angeles

I am at my best when somebody senior tells me exactly what is required, holds me to it, and says plainly when it was not good enough. I have known that about my working life for twenty years and treated it as an ordinary preference. Then last winter I read a post on this board that described the same arrangement outside work, and something rearranged itself in a way I have not been able to put back.

Forty eight, the east side, no experience of any of this beyond a year of reading and thinking.

What I cannot work out is whether that is a genuine reason to be here or whether I have found a tidy explanation for something I would rather not look at directly. I would like to talk to somebody who has watched other people arrive by this route and can tell me which it usually is.

If it is real, what I want is a continuing arrangement with clear standards, regular reporting, and somebody who actually checks. That is the whole picture and there is nothing in it I would be embarrassed to describe.

Not looking for anything to start immediately. Not looking to be treated as fragile because I am new and older than most new people. And not looking for somebody who wants to be called anything before we have met.

If this one reads like your own head rather than somebody to answer, the tactics can wait. These three all happen before there is a first match to get wrong.
