Installed in January, have not written to a single person
- Looking for
- a conversation with somebody experienced and no expectation attached
- Experience
- None. Seven months of reading and nothing else.
- Around
- downtown, Toronto
I installed this in January and I have not sent one message to anybody. Seven months. I read profiles on the subway the way other people read the news, and every so often I open the box to write something and then close it again and put the phone away.
Twenty seven, downtown, and the honest answer to what I am is that I do not know yet. I know what I have thought about for years. I have no idea what any of it would actually be like, or whether the wanting survives contact with a real person and an ordinary Tuesday.
What seven months of reading has taught me is that the people who write well about this are describing something continuous rather than an event, and that is precisely the part that appeals to me. Not a night. A way of arranging things between two people who see each other regularly.
What I am hoping for is a conversation with somebody experienced who will not treat me as a project or a novelty. Coffee, questions, nothing attached to it. I would like to be asked what I actually want rather than handed a list to choose from.
People in my position have a reputation for wasting time and I cannot prove in advance that I will not. What I can offer is that I answer messages and say what I think.
Please do not tell me I will know once I try it. That sentence usually means one evening with a stranger.
