I spent a year in conversations with people twelve hours away

Posted as time_zone_took_a_year, 9 September 2026

Looking for
somebody in this city, which sounds obvious and took me a year
Experience
Five years, one arrangement, entirely on a screen.
Around
the inner city, Sydney

For about a year almost everybody I was speaking to lived on the other side of the world. It happened gradually. I am awake at odd hours, the app kept widening what it showed me, and the conversations were genuinely good because the people in them had no expectation of ever meeting me. There is nothing easier than a dynamic that costs nobody a Tuesday evening.

I got very good at it and it did nothing for my actual life. Five years in and my only real arrangement existed entirely on a screen, ran for eleven months, and ended when she got busy, which is exactly what an arrangement with no physical stake does.

Thirty two, the inner city, switch, five years in. So I have narrowed everything. Radius set as tight as it goes, nobody outside it, and if a conversation drifts towards being pleasant and impossible I say so and stop.

What I want is somebody here, who I could see on a weeknight, with a rhythm that involves being in a room. I go both ways and I would like an arrangement that eventually does too.

Not looking for a long distance correspondence, however good it is, and I know exactly how good they can be. Not looking for anybody who wants to talk for six months before meeting. And not looking to be somebody's late night company, since I have been that for a year and it is a very comfortable way to waste one.

What to have sorted before you reply

Which direction is on the table this month is not in the post, and asking flat out reads badly. That takes a conversation, and a conversation needs a room you can walk out of.
