My English on a screen sounds much harder than I actually am
- Looking for
- patience with a second language and a first conversation
- Experience
- Six years, all of it before I moved, none of it here.
- Around
- Coral Gables, Miami
In my own language I am warm and a bit funny. In English, typed, on a phone, I come out sounding like a form letter, and I have watched three conversations die because of it. Somebody told me last year that my messages read like a complaint to a landlord. She was not being unkind. She was right.
Forty one, submissive, from Lima, six years here and my whole history in this is from before I arrived. I write slowly and I edit too much. If you send me a long message I will take a day, because I want to answer it properly rather than quickly, and the app makes that look like disinterest.
What I would like is somebody who does not mind that. Spanish is easier for me and I would rather use it, but I am not going to make that a condition, because half this board writes in both anyway. Structure, service, someone who tells me what is expected instead of hoping I guess.
I do not want to be corrected on my English while we are talking about anything else. I do not want jokes about the accent, which I have heard all of. And I would rather not spend three weeks in a chat window before anybody suggests sitting down somewhere for an hour, because in person I am a much better version of this.
