Half the people who write to me are in the gap between something that ended and something that has not started. They have left a job, or a marriage, or a country, and they are three months into working out what happens next. Every one of them has been interesting company and not one of them has been in a position to commit to a standing Wednesday. I have stopped taking it personally and started saying it up front.
Fifty one, dominant, I work in freight, north of the city, twenty years in this with four arrangements and the shortest still ran two years.
What I want is dull to describe and very good to live in. A regular evening, obligations through the week, a written understanding revisited twice a year, and enough time in it for both of us to get properly good at each other. That needs a person whose life has already stopped moving.
I am not the man for a transitional period, however flattering the interest is. I am not interested in being anyone's experiment while they decide whether to stay in this city. And I would rather not begin a conversation that opens with how much needs to be sorted out first, because I have had that one four times and it always ends the same way, politely and in September.
